GALVESTON, TX – The Doolin Maritime Careers Camp, a weeklong residential camp, July 30 thru August 5, 2017, is now accepting applications for students that are rising 8th to 10th grades. The camp is free of charge. Deadline for applications is July 10.
A program of the Doolin Maritime Committee of the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Texas A&M University at Galveston, the Careers Camp is designed to increase awareness, generate enthusiasm, and to introduce basic skills for maritime careers. Students will reside on campus in Texas A&M University Galveston student housing for the weeklong program.
Camp activities may include visiting a cruise ship; driving a virtual ship into New York Harbor, experience breathing through SCUBA equipment in a pool, tour the Galveston Ship Channel by boat, a welding/soldering experiment; a firsthand look at the United States Coast Guard Customs security systems; see life aboard an oil rig; guide a remotely operated vehicle, or go sailing. Students will be introduced to the numerous jobs available along the Gulf Coast, and will receive shirts, a back pack, all materials needed for the camp and meals.
The Doolin Maritime Careers Camp is sponsored by Shell Oil and supported by the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce, T & T Salvage, United States Coast Guard, Port of Galveston, BaySmart Galveston, G&H Towing, Rolls-Royce, Galveston College, Odyssey Academy, Mills Shirley Law Firm and Texas A&M University at Galveston.
